Web Dashers Level Editor

The Web Dashers level editor can build and play a small test level, but it is unfinished. We checked placing and deleting blocks, saving, reopening and Save and Play. Treat it as a place for short experiments.

How to open the level editor

The main menu button labelled Level Editor first opens a hub. Create takes you to My Levels.

  1. Choose Level Editor from the main menu, then Create.
  2. Choose New at the bottom right of My Levels.
  3. On the new level screen, choose the crossed-tools button to open the editor.

What you can do in the editor today

Build shows object categories and a grid of objects along the bottom. We selected a block and placed it on the level grid.

Edit let us select that block. Delete removed it when we clicked the block. The editor also displays zoom controls, a position slider and a playtest button.

  1. Choose Build, select an object category, then choose an object.
  2. Click an open part of the level grid to place it.
  3. Choose Edit to select an object, or Delete and click the object to remove it.

What is missing or unfinished

The developers describe the editor as very incomplete and say slopes are still being worked on. We have not verified publishing, complex triggers or a complete building workflow.

In Build mode, some control clicks also left extra blocks under the controls. A saved test contained an unwanted block near the pause button position. Inspect the level after using controls while building.

Switching to Edit before using the pause menu avoided that extra placement in our follow-up test. Check for stray objects before saving.

Saving and playing your own level

The pause menu has five choices: Resume, Save and Play, Save and Exit, Save, and Exit.

Save and Exit returned to the level screen. Reopening the editor showed our saved block. Save and Play launched the test level, and we also completed it from its Play button.

  1. Use the pause button at the upper right of the editor.
  2. Choose Save and Play to save and launch the level, or Save and Exit to return to its detail screen.
  3. From the level screen, use the crossed-tools button to reopen the editor.

We verified reopening in the same browser session. We have not verified retention after refreshing or closing the browser. Keep experiments small.
